Managing Areas and Subareas in the IoT Server Dashboard

Purpose

Organizing your IoT devices into Areas and Subareas helps keep your system structured, easy to navigate, and scalable. This guide explains how to view, create, and update areas and subareas within the IoT Server Dashboard.

Overview

In the IoT Server Dashboard, Areas represent logical or physical spaces where devices are installed—for example, a "Penthouse."

  • Root Areas have no parent and define the top level of your hierarchy.
  • Subareas belong to a parent area and allow you to break down spaces into smaller sections (e.g., a "Living Room" inside a "Penthouse").

1. Viewing Areas

List of Areas

When you open the Areas section:

  • You will see only root areas listed.
  • Subareas will not appear here; they are accessed through their parent area’s details page.

Navigation:

  1. Log in to the IoT Server Dashboard.
  2. From the sidebar, click Areas.
  3. Review the displayed list—these are all root areas.

2. Viewing Area Details

To view details for a specific area:

  1. Go to Areas from the main menu.
  2. Click on the area name.
  3. On the details page, you will see:
    • Area details (name, identifier, parent, etc.)
    • Subareas list—all nested subareas under this area.
    • Devices list—all devices directly assigned to this area.

3. Creating an Area

To create a new root area:

  1. Go to Areas from the sidebar.
  2. Click Create Area.
  3. Fill in the form:
    • Name (required)—a descriptive name, e.g., "Penthouse"
    • Identifier (required for root areas)—a unique code, e.g., "808"
  4. Click Save.
  5. You’ll be returned to the Areas list, where the new area appears.

4. Creating a Subarea

To create a subarea under an existing area:

  1. Go to the details page of the parent area.
  2. Click Create Subarea.
  3. Fill in the form:
    • Name (required)—e.g., “Living Room”
    • Parent Area (defaults to the current area)
    • Identifier (optional)
  4. Click Save.
  5. The subarea will now be listed under the parent’s Subareas section.

5. Updating an Area or Subarea

To modify an existing area or subarea:

  1. Go to the details page of the area.
  2. Click Update.
  3. Edit the following fields:
    • Name
    • Identifier (required for root areas)
    • Parent Area (can be reassigned to another parent or made a root area)
  4. Click Save to apply the changes.

Important Notes

  • Identifier Rules: Required for root areas and must be unique among all root areas.
  • Hierarchy Integrity: You cannot assign an area as its own parent or move it under one of its descendants.
  • Soft-Deleted Areas: Deleted areas are hidden from lists and cannot be selected as parents.

You now know how to structure your IoT devices using areas and subareas for better organization and navigation.
